Calibration versus verification
Calibration produces a measurement result with a stated uncertainty against reference values. Performance verification confirms the machine still meets a specification, usually ISO 10360-2 or ASME B89.4.1.
Most site visits combine verification with geometric adjustment and, where the controller allows it, an update to the volumetric error compensation map.
What a visit covers
Scales, air bearings and geometry are checked before length measurement error and probing error are tested.
- 01
Scale and reader head
X, Y and Z scales are inspected and cleaned; reader head output is checked.
- 02
Air bearings and airlines
Bearing condition and supply air quality are checked before geometry testing.
- 03
Geometry
Straightness, linearity and squareness are tested in the XY, ZX and ZY planes.
- 04
Length measurement error
ISO 10360-2 E0 and E150 testing: five lengths, three repeats, seven positions, 105 measurements.
- 05
Probing error
PFTU tested per ISO 10360-5 on a calibrated test sphere separate from the reference sphere.
Sequence of a visit
- 01
Inspect
Scales, reader heads, air bearings and airlines are checked and cleaned.
- 02
Test geometry
Straightness, linearity and squareness are measured in each plane.
- 03
Test as-found
Length measurement error and probing error are recorded before adjustment.
- 04
Adjust and verify as-left
Geometric adjustment and compensation updates are followed by a full as-left test.

Why St. Louis CMM Calibration and Repair
- 01
As-found recorded first
Out-of-tolerance conditions are documented before any correction is made.
- 02
Artifacts matched to the machine
Gauge blocks, step gauges and ball bars are selected for the volume tested.
- 03
Repair through re-verification
Probe, scale, air bearing and drive repair end in a full as-left certificate.
